Application for admission to Ph D is invited from eligible candidates in the prescribed form for the year 2009-10.
A candidate shall submit duly filled-in application along with necessary documents to the Chairperson of the concerned Department by 30-09-2009.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
a) Full-time/Regular candidates:
b) Part-time candidates (As per Regulation No. 1.3): A Department of Studies may also have a part time Ph.D. Programme for the benefit of eligible regular teachers of Junior Colleges within the Jurisdiction of Karnatak University Dharwad / Degree colleges of Karnatak University / of any other Indian Universities /Approved Research Institutions/ Organizations Library professional in University and college Librarians/Scientific Officers/Scientists/ Physical Education Personnel /Non-teaching Staff of Karnatak University / Employees of State/Central Govt., Temporary teachers working on Part-time or Full-time basis subject to compliance with the other related regulations governing the Ph.D. Programme.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO Ph.D. COURSE
1.1
(a) A candidate who has obtained a Master's degree from any University in the State or from any other University recognized as equivalent thereto securing not less then 55% marks in the aggregate at the master's Degree Course shall be eligible to register for the Ph.D. Degree Programme. However, in the case of SC / ST and the Category-I candidates the Minimum marks required shall be 50%.
(b) Such of the teachers employed on regular basis before 31.03.1992, who are continuing in service in any of the affiliated colleges / constituent colleges / PG Department of Karnatak University shall be eligible for registration, subject to a minimum aggregate score of 50% at the concerned Master's Degree level.
(c) A candidate who is eligible as indicated in (a) / (b) above shall be selected on the basis of an Entrance Test administered by the University. The Merit list of such candidates shall be prepared by giving 50% weightage to the entrance test scored and 50% weightage for the score at Master's Degree level. Only those candidates, who have secured a minimum of 50% marks, (45% Marks in case of SC/ST/Cat-1 Candidates), aggregate at the entrance examination shall be qualified for consideration However, the candidates who have passed the NET /SLET /GATE /JRF /M.Phil /FIP /QIP Fellows and candidates selected to work under specialized funded projects and Govt. sponsored Foreign Students are exempted from the Entrance Test. They shall directly seek registration for Ph.D. programme after consulting the desired research guide.

The Subject of research shall be the one in which the Candidate holds Master's Degree. However, such candidates are also eligible to pursue the Ph.D. Programme in any other cognate subject, provided such subject is approved as cognate by the respective BOS (PG).
Application form along with other details in this regard are available on payment of Rs.300/- each in "PRASARANGA" Karnatak University, Dharwad-580 003.
Application shall be sent to the concerned Chairperson of the Dept. K.U.Dharwad (KU, PG Campus, Karwar in case of Marine Biology subject) duly completed in all respects along with Challan/D.D. for Entrance Test fee of Rs.500/- (Rs.250/- for fulltime SC/ST/Cat-I students) along with the following documents.
a) Attested copies of statement of marks of Bachelor's degree, Master's degree & M.Phil. Part-I & II examinations (where applicable)
b) No objection & service Certificates from the employers in respect of candidates who are employed.
c) Eligibility Certificate (Original) issued by the Karnatak University, (for candidates belonging to other Universities or Institutions).
d) Migration Certificate (Original) in respect of the candidates from other Universities or Institutions.
e) An attested copy of the Caste certificate in case of SC/ST/Category-I candidates.
f) An attested document pertaining to NET'SLET/CATE/FIP/QIP/specialized funded projects/Govt., sponsored foreign students.

Mode of Entrance Test:
There shall be 2 papers carrying 50 marks each.
a) The First Paper consists of following components:
i) Test of reasoning
ii) Language Comprehension &
iii) Data interpretation
There will be 50 multiple-choice questions. Each question carries one mark.
b) The second paper is based on the contents of the respective subject in which he/she intends to pursue Ph.D. There will be 50 multiple-choice questions. Each question carries one mark.
c) The medium of languages shall be in English. However in case of languages the medium of languages shall be the respective language.
Medium of Instruction The thesis shall be written or printed in English/Hindi/Kannada, save when the subject matter relates to a modern European or modern Indian language, in which case it may be written or printed in that language. The Language in which the candidate desires to write the thesis be indicated at the time of registration itself. If the thesis is written in a language other than English, 4 copies of abstract of the thesis in English be Submitted.
FEES STRUCTURE:
Full-time SC/ST/Cat-I candidates are exempted from payment of Tuition fees. This concession is available on production of relevant certificate only.
