National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur was established jointly by the central and state government of Bihar in the year 1960. The institute was recognized as the Regional Institute of Technology, which was later renamed on 1st April, 2003 as National Institute of Technology. The change in name took place when the central government took over the administration of the institute. The institute is one of the premier educational institutes of the region and among the most reputed Jamshedpur colleges. The National Institute of Technology in Jamshedpur started with the undergraduate courses in only four disciplines and has grown to offer undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses in 12 streams of science, arts and engineering.
The campus of the National Institute of Technology at Jamshedpur is nestled amidst the low lying hills in the fringes of the city of Jamshedpur and is spread over a sprawling area of 289 acres. The main building of NIT Jamshedpur has the administrative unit and the academic section, which comprises of the separate departments, classrooms, halls and the library. Accommodation is provided to the staff in the staff quarters that lies in the eastern part of the campus. The college has 10 hostels for the students as well as a number of playgrounds. The infrastructure of the college also includes the workshops and laboratories that are equipped with the technical instruments required for the study of the sciences.
