A 23-year-old woman was attacked with acid by a man whose advances she had spurned in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir on Wednesday.
The police have identified the accused as Reyaz Ahmad Nath who has been arrested. The victim has been shifted to the hospital. DIG of Srinagar visited the victim in the hospital and took her statement.
The Airport Road in Srinagar, where the incident took place, has emerged as particularly unsafe for women and witnessed a number of reported crimes against women. On May 3, 2009, 17-year-old Romana Javed was run over in broad daylight and killed by a car driven by two teenagers whose advances she had spurned. The police arrested the two teenagers, Shoaib Daryeel and Ubaid Ahmed Khan, who are now serving a jail sentence for murder.
The police have stepped up vigil on the airport road, the DSP said.
