About College
Institute was started under the auspices of the Avinashilingam Education Trust in 1957 with 45 students. It is now the largest institution in the country for imparting Home Science Education at all levels. It was one of the eight colleges on which the University of Madras conferred autonomy in June 1978 and the first of the women's colleges to get that distinction. Autonomy gave the College scope for academic freedom for innovations in teaching and research.
The Government of India declared Sri Avinashilingam Home Science College for Women as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act in June 1988. The College has been renamed as Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women and has completed eleven years as a University.
The Institute follows the educational ideals of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Holy Mother Sri Saradamani Devi and Mahatma Gandhi and upholds a life of purity, discipline and service. A temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna commands the campus. Daily prayer and worship are an integral part of the campus life. All the students and staff are expected to participate in the common assembly prayers.
The Institute is organised under six Faculties, namely, Home Science, Science, Humanities, Education, Business studies and Engineering, each faculty functioning under its respective Dean. Since 1989 - 90 the University is offering two Majors and two Ancillaries for the Under Graduate Degree courses. The pattern of education has been fully semesterised. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each semester having a minimum of 100 working days. The semester pattern offers to each student, individual attention of the teacher and facilitates the student's all round development. It calls for active participation of the students in the learning process.
Regular attendance is an important feature of the semester pattern. Evaluation of the student's work is comprehensive, with a weight age of 100 per cent for UG and PG for internal assessment. Examinations for the courses offered in a semester are conducted in the same semester to make learning more effective and to reduce the burden on the students.

Serve as a centre for national integration bring women from all parts of the country and develop an all-India perspective. Provide knowledge in Home Sciences, Science, Engineering, Humanities and the Fine Arts to the highest level Ph.D. and beyond. Function as a centre for the development of women and children. Disseminate the findings of research to the community to facilitate its development.
