Behala College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, came into being in the year 1963 with the mission of imparting undergraduate level education among the people of the region. It was established under the Refugee Rehabilitation (RR) scheme of the Government of India and came under the pay packet scheme of the Government of West Bengal in the late seventies. The University Grants Commission (UGC) releases grants during each plan period as developmental assistance to the institution. Situated in a semi-urban middle-class locality in the southwestern suburb of the city of Kolkata, the institution has evolved into its present shape and structure in conformity with the changing socio-academic background of the region and the state.
