Calcutta National Medical College had its origin in the then founded National Medical Institute or "Jatiya Ayurbigyan Vidyalaya" on 1st of Baisakh in 1921. This institute is a product of the historical "Non Co-operation Movement". The National Medical Institute started at the Forbes Mansion at 11 Wellington Square with a mere sum of Rs 1,500/- donated by "Tilak Swaraj Fund". Soon after the Institute moved to 189 Maniktala Main Road. Students, many of whom are also followers of the non co-operation movement, did their 5 year course in Maniktala Main Road building. In 1925 Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the first Mayor of Calcutta, handed over a plot of land of 4 acres at 24 Gorachand Road from the Calcutta Corporation for Hospital purpose, after his demise Jotindra Mohan Sengupta as the Mayor laid the foundation stone of a 100 bedded hospital on 20th February 1927 and named it as "CHITTARANJAN HOSPITAL".
