About College
The Centre of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in Marine Biology is a highly reputed and a pioneering marine academic and research institute in India. The growth of marine biology is this country is synonymous with the growth of the Centre. The Eminent Scientist (Late) Prof. R.V. Seshaiya was instrumental, with his devoted team of researchers in setting up the India's first marine biological station, modeled after the Marine Biological Station of Woods Hole, USA. The Centre received constant and continuous support from the authorities of the University, Fouder Pro-chancellors, Vice-Chancellors and Registrars. The Centre was started as a field laboratory for the Department of Zoology, Annamalai University during the year 1955 at Parangipettai on the foreshore of the Vellar estuary. A full fledged Marine Biological Station was declared open by the first Chairman of UGC, Dr. C.D. Deshmukh, under the presidentship of Dr. Rajah Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, Founder Pro-Chancellor, Annamalai University during the year 1957.
