Dayanand College, Hisar owes its existence to the dream, vision and missionary zeal of a selfless and distinguished educationist Late Lala Gian Chand Mahajan, later christened as Swami Munishwaranand. A teacher by profession, a social crusader by inclination and a saint by temperament, Lala Gian Chand Mahajan shaped the destiny of this institution for the first nine formative years as its Principal. Drawing upon his life-long experience as a teacher and later as a Principal of D.A.V. College, Jalandhar, a premier college of North India, Lala Gian Chand laid the firm foundations of this nursery of higher education and put it on sound footing.
Dedicated to the lofty ideals and noble principles of the great Indian sage and seer Swami Dayanand Saraswati, this college was founded in the historic city of Hisar in the year 1950 with the active support of the galaxy of local philanthropists and dedicated Arya Samajists. fg The emergence of this seat of learning marked a new era in the annals of this region as it provided a great impetus to higher education. Hisar had through the ages remained a part of an educationally and culturally obscure and dark region. It continued to be a dust bowl with a dry and dreary intellectual landscape even after independence. The opening of a college here was thus like creating an oasis in the desert. One of the characteristic features of this college since its inception has been to cater especially to the needs of rural youth. The provision of Hostel facility from the very start of this college had attracted the major chunk of its clientele from rural areas. There was once a time when the first generation of Graduates in the rural areas of Hisar region was predominated by the alumni of Dayanand College. It continues to draw to this day students from far off places owing to decent Hostel facilities both for boys and girls in addition to conducive and congenial academic atmosphere in the college. The year 1962 brought about a significant change in the management of this college. The Local Managing Committee of this college transferred this institution to the D.A.V. College Managing Committee, New Delhi. This Trust runs over 700 educational institutions all over India and holds a unique position in the educational world. The accent of this organization is on value-based quality education. The pursuit of excellence is their mission and motto. The College was declared Best College among the non-goverment Colleges of Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1997-98.'
