Shri Jumna Doss and Shri Amichand Doss established the college to perpetuate the memory of their father Shri Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss. With a humble beginning as an undergraduate college in 1964, it grew into a multidisciplinary centre of learning. To provide educational opportunities to the working class, the college started evening courses (1971) and distance learning programmes of IGNOU (1992). Today, the college is one of the reputed educational institutions in the metropolis of Chennai. The college is affiliated to the University of Madras.
