The College of Fisheries, Mangalore came into existence in 1969 as the Fisheries Campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. This was the first Fisheries College to be started in India and the second in South-East Asia. The erstwhile Marine Products Processing Training Centre (MPPTC) established in 1963 under Indo-Japanese collaboration was handed over to the University by the Government of Karnataka as part of its contribution towards establishing the College of Fisheries. The Hoige Bazar campus with an area of 1.62 hectares became established as the Technology Wing of the College and is approximately 4 km from Mangalore city Centre. The main campus named Mathsyanagar with an area of 16.36 hectares was inaugurated in 1973 and is situated at a distance of 5kms from the city.
