Guru Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969 under an Act to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

To make provision for imparting education for promoting research in the humanities, learned Professions, sciences, especially of applied nature, Technology and such other branches of learning and courses of study as it may think fit; To make provision for study and research on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and their cultural and re1igious impact in the context of Indian and world civilizations; To promote Punjabi studies, to provide for research in Punjabi language and literature and to undertake measures for the development of Punjabi language,literature and culture-,and to make special provision for the spread of University education among classes and communities which are educationally backward.
