Government College, Rajahmundry, originally started functioning as a Zilla Parishad in 1853 and was upgraded as a Provisional school in 1868. In 1891 the College was granted affiliation by Madras University. It is now the oldest college in the state. The college was affiliated to Andhra University in 1926. Undergraduate courses were started in the college from1930. The college has the privilege of having Dr.Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan, former President of India, as a faculty member in the department of Philosophy. Sri Tanguturi Prakasam (First CM of Andhra Pradesh), Sri V.K.Krishna Menon(Former Defence Minister ), and Sri Koka Subba Rao (Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court) were all students of this century old institution. Centenary celebrations of the College were held during February 1960, with Sri C.D.Deshmukh, the then Chairman of U.G.C, as President. Post Graduate courses in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were introduced During the academic year 1971-72and the college has the distinction of being the First college in Government sector to introduce the post graduate courses in science subjects. M.A.(Telugu) and M.Com. courses were introduced from1982 and 1987 respectively. During the present academic year M.Sc (Zoology) and M.Sc(Computer Sciences) are introduced. Vocational courses in B.A (Actuarial science Mathematics, and Statistics) was introduced during the academic year 1996-97,with financial assistance from the U.G.C. During the academic year 1998-99, the college introduced several restructured courses in B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com., several new subjects like Biotechnology, Microbiology, Medical Lab Technology and Geo-Engineering , Computers in B.Sc., and Computer Applications, and Foreign Trade in B.Com., and Tourism and Travel in B.A., were introduced on Self Finance basis. University Grants Commission granted Autonomous status to this college during the academic year 2000-2001and it is one of the two Government Colleges, which were granted autonomy. Under the Autonomous set up, the college introduced Semester System and the semester end examinations were conducted successfully. Under this system, each academic is divided into two semesters and examinations were held at the end of each semester. External paper setting and external valuations are adopted. Metcalfe Hostel, attached to the college was started in July1950.It is under the control of the Principal assisted by a committee consisting of a Deputy warden and two other staff members of the college.
