After Independence of the country it was named as Govt. Industrial School. In 1968 was upgraded to Govt. Institute Of Garment Technology and affiliated with the Punjab State Board of Technical Education. The diploma of cutting and tailoring was changed to diploma in Garment Manufacturing Technology.
