The Institute of Library & information Science, Patna University, housed in the Central Library building on the first floor, came into existence initially by approval of the Department of Higher Education; Govt. of Bihar with the objectives of imparting job oriented education in Bachelor of Library & Information Science, in 1980 Shri B. P. Mishra University Librarian was appointed its first Director.
The discipline of Library and Information Science is a key to all the disciplines of the universe of knowledge. We are fastly moving into a information age where access to the information, on which our knowledge is based through modern computer, communication & micrographic technologies has enhanced the scope and importance of Library and Information Science education and has opened up a vast range of information technologies which have provided a lot of employment opportunities in almost all the Govt. Departments and Non-Govt. Organisations. The Institute has been running the course under self finance scheme since 1995.
