The Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre established in 1996, received approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI), for the award of MBBS degree from its very first batch. The college has been accorded the status of University (under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, vide Notification No. F. 9-39/2001-U.3 dated 11th Jan. 2003 of the Government of India) within a period of just six and a half years of establishment, perhaps the shortest period for such recognition. This is the first private college in the state of Maharashtra to receive MCI approval to increase the intake capacity from 100 to 150 students in 2003, again perhaps within the shortest span of time of seven years of establishment. In 2003, the college was permitted to teach post-graduate courses in a couple of subjects. By June 2005, the college was allowed the intake of 81 students in post graduate degree and diploma courses in the 19 subjects.
