The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Science in a joint venture with the government of Sikkim has finally bagged the permanent recognition of the Medical Council of India (MCI). Prior to this, it had received an adhoc clearance for the batch of 2005 and 2006.
The outstation students of the previous batches are understandably happy as without a permanent clearance it would have been difficult for them to procure a registration certificate which is necessary to start practicing after the one-year internship.

Reportedly, the MCI took seven years to award a permanent recognition to the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences for some documents that the institute could not furnish initially.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, along with the Vice-Chancellor and other officials met the chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling to express gratitude for the government�s help in getting them the recognition.
Chamling said that now the authorities should try provide the college and the referral hospital attached to it with advanced medical facilities. In this way the students of the institute could be expected to complement the capacity building programme undertaken by the state government to increase the competence of the Sikkim youth.
Pai said that the institution was committed to build an intellectual capital in Sikkim. He also said that Rs 200 crore was invested in the state by the group with the same objective.
