Over the years, many students have expressed their hopes and fears to Amma. Many have tearfully confided their disappointment over not being able to pay for a college education. As Amma wiped their tears, she formed a resolve that all students should be able to obtain a college degree. Amma?s compassion took form in 1999, when the Sri Karunamayi Degree College, located in Gudur, Andhra Pradesh, opened its doors to the first class of students. The primary mission of the school is to provide poor students with a quality college education, regardless of their ability to pay tuition fees. Today, nearly 10% of the college?s students are attending classes completely free of charge, and 90% of the students have been granted reduced fees according to their families? financial status. Since its creation in 1999, the college has grown from 38 students to over 1000 students this year. Degrees are awarded in a number of areas, including microbiology, chemistry, computer programming, and electronics. Amma takes a personal interest in the students? lives, and visits with them in order to give them inspiration, guidance, and encouragement. In response to the dedication of their teachers as well as this personal encouragement from Amma, the students have achieved a high rate of academic success. Recently, the college ranked first in academic performance in its entire district. This success can be attributed not only to the well-rounded education the students are receiving, but also to a love for learning kindled by the caring and supportive college staff.
