S.I.R.D. has its history way back to 1961, when it was established as a Training institute in Bhavani Sagar as �Orientation study centre�, to train the middle level officials of Southern States and the neighbouring Union Territories, involved in Community Development and extension service programmes. This Institute was handed over to the Department of Rural Development, Government of TamilNadu in 1967 and a new name was given to the Institute as 'State Institute of Community Development and Panchayat Raj'. The present name of this Institute i.e. 'State Institute of Rural Development was given in the year 1969. In 1986 SIRD was shifted from Bhavani Sagar to Madras with an aim of availing the service of talented, eminent and skilled Guest faculty as resource person to the participants and also to be nearer to the State Capital, as this Institute gradually evolved to become a State Level Apex Training Institute.
