A Common All-India Medical Entrance Examination has been mooted from 2012 for Medical colleges across the country. There are 300 Medical colleges and 1.6 lakh aspirants across the country every year.
The move was announced formally on day one of the two-day National Conclave of Vice- Chancellors of Medical Universities held at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (Yashada) on May 6.
Chairman of the Board of Governors in Medical Council of India (MCI), Dr. S. K. Sarin, announced the urgent need for a Common National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) that would be common for all aspirants entering Medical education.
Vice-Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Dr. Arun Jamkar, the organiser of the conclave told the audience, "An entrance test has already been proposed by the MCI and it will be implemented from 2012."
